The Key to Volunteer Engagement: Why Supporting Your Board is Essential

In the space of nonprofit organizations and community driven initiatives, the backbone lies in the dedication of volunteers. These groups contribute their skills, time and passion to furthering the mission and impact of these organizations. However, the effectiveness of these efforts can be significantly enhanced or impeded by the support and structure provided by the entity and the board that oversees them.

The Volunteer Management Professionals of Canada (VMPC) is the champion in the field of Volunteer Management. Dedicated to advocacy, capacity building and networking, it connects and empowers a network of professionals and passionately elevates the quality of volunteerism in Canada.

The theme of VMPC’s 2024 conference is “Examining Engagement”. Mel Ifada will be facilitating a workshop “The Key to Volunteer Engagement: Why Supporting Your Board is Essential”. May 10th at 10:45 AM – 12:15 PM in Dundarave Room, Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown. We will discuss the dynamics of how a well supported board can cultivate a positive and productive environment that creates a culture of engagement and commitment among volunteers.

At the core of the workshop is the recognition that an engaged and effective board is essential for building and retaining a thriving volunteer community. Boards that are supportive, proactive and organized create an environment where volunteers feel empowered and motivated to contribute their best.

This workshop will go beyond theoretical discussions by offering practical insights and strategies for board organizations that directly impact board volunteer involvement and retention. Attendees can expect to gain actionable takeaways that can be implemented with their organizations.

A highlight of the workshop is its interactive brainstorming session for real world solutions. Through small group activities, participants are encouraged to share challenges they’ve encountered in their teams. This collaborative approach allows for an exchange of ideas and the development of solutions using the frameworks learned during the presentation.

As a part of the workshop, Mel will invite participants to share their lessons, case studies, experience and expertise. This collective sharing of knowledge contributes to a broader learning community where insights are shared and challenges are addressed. It will offer a holistic approach to exploring engagement, from the board support to practical strategies allowing for continuous learning and creating positive change in the nonprofit sector.
